Alzheimer's research reveals immune triggers may originate outside the brain

Researchers at Washington University in St. Louis have identified that immune activity linked to Alzheimer-like brain damage may originate outside the central nervous system. A study published in Nature Neuroscience suggests that CD8+ T-cells, which contribute to nerve tissue destruction, receive instructions from dendritic cells in the deep cervical lymph nodes in the neck rather than within the brain itself. This finding indicates that the immune system's malfunction begins in the periphery before manifesting as brain damage.

In a separate development, Columbia University researchers published findings in The Lancet Neurology regarding early detection. By combining a blood test for the p-tau217 protein with an APOE genetic test, clinicians may be able to predict the onset of clinical Alzheimer's symptoms in high-risk, asymptomatic patients three to six years in advance. Additionally, research in Nature Aging suggests the APOE ε4 variant may increase Fibronectin levels in the blood-brain barrier, potentially leading to barrier leakage.
