Alzheimer's Research UK urges summer brain‑health habits
Experts from Alzheimer’s Research UK and the specialist clinic Re:Cognition Health recommend six simple habits to protect brain health during the summer. Information services manager Katie Puckering emphasizes regular physical activity – about 150 minutes of aerobic exercise a week – to keep blood pressure, cholesterol and cerebral blood flow at healthy levels, noting its role in reducing dementia risk. Neurologist Dr Steve Allder explains that exercise also boosts brain‑derived neurotrophic factor, supporting nerve cells.
Both experts stress the importance of adequate sleep, advising seven hours of deep sleep each night to allow the brain to clear waste products. Additional suggestions include limiting screen time before bed, keeping the bedroom dark and cool, staying hydrated, managing stress, and maintaining a balanced diet rich in nutrients that support cognitive function.
