The Alzheimer’s Society is campaigning for the UK government to implement mandatory NHS waiting time targets for dementia diagnoses. The organization is advocating for a standard that guarantees an accurate diagnosis, a care plan, and access to treatment within 18 weeks of a GP referral.

An open letter was delivered to Downing Street by high-profile supporters, including broadcaster Jon Snow, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2023. Other signatories include actors Vicky McClure, Suranne Jones, Dame Meera Syal, and Sir Jonathan Pryce.

A survey of over 1,000 UK caregivers revealed significant delays, with 45% reporting that the person they care for waited more than six months for a diagnosis after seeking help. These delays have profound practical consequences: 46% of caregivers stated the wait impacted their work, 35% felt it disrupted future planning, and 30% felt their lives were on hold.
