Alzira marks 750th anniversary of King Jaume I's death
Alzira commemorated the 750th anniversary of King Jaume I's death with a series of symbolic and historical events. An institutional ceremony at Casa de l’Olivera included a floral tribute and remarks by Mayor Alfons Domínguez, emphasizing the monarch’s lasting influence on Valencia. Over 400 participants took part in historical reenactments in the city’s park, dramatizing key moments such as the 1242 surrender of Alzira and the king’s abdication in favor of his son.
The city also welcomed the temporary loan of Ignacio Pinazo’s 1881 painting “Los últimos momentos del rey don Jaume el Conquistador en el acto de entrega de su espada a su hijo don Pere,” which had been conserved by the Diputación de Valencia. The artwork will be displayed at the Municipal Museum of Alzira (MUMA) starting in September, further highlighting the anniversary celebrations.
