Rome cemeteries: AMA dismisses 7 staff over illegal handling of remains

The municipal waste company AMA has dismissed seven employees and suspended four others following the discovery of grave irregularities at the Flaminio (Prima Porta) and Maccarese cemeteries in Rome. Internal investigations revealed that staff were prematurely reducing human remains into ossuary boxes without waiting for the legally required natural mineralization process to complete.

Investigators are examining whether workers accepted bribes to falsely certify that decomposition was complete, a practice that allows families to free up burial spaces more quickly and potentially reduces maintenance costs. Such actions violate mortuary police regulations, which mandate specific timeframes—typically 10 years for ground burials and 30 years for loculi—before certain procedures can be performed.

In response to the scandal, AMA has referred the findings to the judicial authorities and the Mayor of Rome. Mario Baccini, the Mayor of Fiumicino, has also called for full transparency to determine the extent of the impact on families whose loved ones were buried in the Maccarese cemetery.
