Ama Qamata celebrates South African screening of ‘Fight Like a Girl’

South African actress Ama Qamata celebrated the first major South African screening of her film, ‘Fight Like a Girl’, at Ster-Kinekor in Sandton on August 19. The event, which saw tickets sell out within a week, drew industry figures, fans, and local celebrities, including Miss South Africa Qhawekazi Mazaleni.

Directed by Matthew Leutwyler, the film is inspired by the true story of an all-women boxing club in eastern Congo. The narrative follows Safi, a young Congolese woman played by Qamata, who escapes forced labour in an illegal mineral mine and finds refuge in Goma, where she rebuilds her life through boxing. The production was filmed on location in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda.

The screening included a panel discussion hosted by Women for Change, focusing on themes of resilience, survival, and the empowerment of African women. Qamata, who previously gained international recognition in ‘Blood & Water’, expressed her gratitude for the reception, stating, “I’m humbled by the women who showed up for this film.”
