Amado Nervo: Baptismal records confirm real name

Historical records from the Tepic Cathedral have confirmed that the prominent Mexican poet Amado Nervo was born José Amado, rather than Juan Crisóstomo Ruiz de Nervo y Ordaz as previously widely believed. The baptismal register from 1870 shows he was baptized on September 9, 1870, to his parents, Amado Nervo and Juana Ordaz.

This discovery clarifies long-standing debate regarding whether ‘Amado Nervo’ was a literary pseudonym. The poet himself had previously noted in autobiographical writings that his father, also named Amado, had shortened the family surname from Ruiz de Nervo to Nervo and given him his own name.

Nervo, one of Mexico’s most popular poets of the first half of the 20th century, was known for his mystical spirituality and existential themes. His career spanned journalism and poetry, leaving a significant impact on the Latin American literary movement.
