Portugal health services face emergency wait times and network reorganization

Portugal's National Health Service (SNS) is facing significant challenges in emergency care, with recent data showing urgent patients waiting nearly 10 hours for medical observation at Hospital Professor Doutor Fernando Fonseca in Amadora-Sintra. Portimão Hospital also reported wait times exceeding five hours for urgent cases. SNS executive director Álvaro Almeida noted that structural issues at the Amadora-Sintra facility are unlikely to be resolved in the short term.

In response, Health Minister Ana Paula Martins announced a year-long reorganization of the national emergency network, aimed at optimizing resources and reducing wait times through regionalization. The first results of this initiative are expected by the end of November.

Separately, Lusíadas Saúde has inaugurated the Lusíadas Beloura hospital in Sintra. The new facility represents a 40 million euro investment and is expected to create approximately 500 jobs, providing capacity for over 100,000 consultations and 4,000 surgeries annually.
