Amalfi Coast faces infrastructure and mobility planning challenges
The Amalfi Coast is facing a planning paradox as the Campania Region continues to pursue large-scale infrastructure projects, such as rock variants and massive parking lots, designed years ago. Critics argue that these traditional approaches do not align with the territory's need for sustainable management and its status as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Instead of expanding traffic capacity through concrete-heavy construction, there is a push for intelligent regulation of visitor flows. A pilot project, the Amalfi Coast ZTL (Limited Traffic Zone), has been approved by Parliament and validated by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. This digital ecosystem utilizes electronic gates, real-time control rooms, and web platforms to monitor and limit access based on the actual carrying capacity of the local municipalities.
