Italian towns launch sewage cleaning, marine patrols and waste monitoring initiatives

In Terlizzi, the municipal administration announced a second cycle of sewage‑network cleaning, flushing and disinfection scheduled from 29 July to 7 August, carried out by Acquedotto Pugliese to improve urban hygiene and prevent service disruptions.

The former landfill at Mariano Comense, now in the decommissioning phase, faces criticism from the environmental group Circolo Ambiente “Ilaria Alpi” over missed biogas and leachate monitoring obligations by the former waste‑operator, raising concerns about air and groundwater contamination.

Along the Amalfi Coast, the FLAG “Approdo di Ulisse” summer service began on 26 July, deploying the anti‑pollution vessels “Costa d’Amalfi” and the fully electric “Penisola Sorrentina” through September to collect floating waste, plastic and foam, while providing continuous marine‑environment monitoring.

In Cirò Marina, the nonprofit Ambiente Mare Italia joined the “Rifiuto l’inciviltà” campaign, organizing clean‑up actions and public awareness events to combat littering and protect coastal areas.

Legambiente’s “Goletta Verde” campaign reported that roughly one‑third of sampled coastal and river‑mouth sites in Lazio are polluted, while also highlighting severe restrictions on public beach access in Nettuno, where only about 10 % of the shoreline remains freely usable.

Separately, lifeguards rescued a swimmer near Castel Porziano after she was pulled into a rip current despite red‑flag warnings, underscoring safety challenges on Italian beaches.
