Amalfi Coast leaders prioritize elderly care over tourism

The Amalfi Coast is facing a significant demographic challenge characterized by a rapidly aging population. In many small villages within the 13 municipalities of the region, more than a quarter of residents are over the age of 65, a figure notably higher than the national average in Italy.

Local leaders are calling for urban planning protections to prioritize the needs of elderly residents over tourism. The region's unique geography, featuring steep stairs and narrow alleys, creates physical barriers for those with reduced mobility, increasing the risk of social isolation.

Furthermore, there is a critical shortage of residential care facilities. Campania currently offers an average of only 2 beds per 1,000 elderly residents, compared to a national average of approximately 22. The former San Michele hospital has been identified as a key site for addressing these social and healthcare needs.
