Gospel of Matthew: Parable of the Wedding Banquet
The Gospel of Matthew (22:1-14) presents a parable regarding a king who prepares a wedding banquet for his son. When the initial guests refuse the invitation to attend—some prioritizing their fields or businesses and others reacting with violence against the king's servants—the king responds by sending his troops to punish the murderers and destroy their city.
Following this, the king instructs his servants to invite everyone they encounter at the crossroads, regardless of whether they are good or bad, to fill the banquet hall. The narrative concludes with the king discovering a guest who is not wearing wedding attire. Upon being questioned, the man remains silent, leading the king to order him to be cast out into the darkness. The parable concludes with the teaching: “For many are called, but few are chosen.”
