Amalia García calls for care systems to support women's labor participation

During the IV International Care Congress, ‘Towards a Sustainable Society’, Amalia García Medina, president of the Commission for the Follow-up of the 2030 Agenda, emphasized the need for public policies that focus on liberating women's time. She argued that while Mexico City has 60 support programs for care recipients and 60 for caregivers, existing economic transfers do not adequately address the time constraints faced by caregivers, a role that falls disproportionately on women.

García Medina stated that “economic transfers are important, but they do not substitute a caregiver welfare state,” calling for the state to assume more responsibility to ensure a different distribution of duties.

Senator Eréndira Olimpia Cova Brindis also addressed the congress, noting that inclusive economic development is impossible if a segment of the population faces labor market barriers due to unequal care responsibilities. Cova Brindis suggested that addressing this requires analyzing public finances, fiscal policy with a gender perspective, and how public resources are collected and distributed.
