Amaliada: Two men released after burying mother in garden

Two men, aged 37 and 44, have been released following the discovery that they buried their 79-year-old mother in a shallow pit behind their home in Amaliada, Greece. A forensic examination conducted in Patras determined that her death was caused by natural causes, with no evidence of criminal activity.

The brothers reportedly decided to bypass legal burial procedures due to severe financial difficulties and an inability to cover funeral costs. They wrapped the body in a blanket and buried it in a pit approximately half a meter deep in a plot of land located two meters from where the family dog was tied.

The incident came to light after a third brother, residing in Athens, became concerned when he could not reach their mother by phone. Upon learning of the burial, he contacted the police. The men faced charges related to illegal burial and failure to report a death, but were released after the initial investigation and exhumation.
