Amalie Iuel finishes seventh in 400m hurdles European final
Norwegian athlete Amalie Iuel finished seventh in the 400m hurdles final at the European Athletics Championships with a time of 54.70 seconds. Iuel attributed her performance to exhaustion, noting she felt she had nothing left to give after a demanding schedule.
Earlier in the championships, Iuel won a gold medal as part of the mixed 4x400m relay team. Following that victory, she competed in the 400m hurdles semifinals, clocking 54.22 seconds to secure her place in the final. She reported having only about five hours of sleep between the relay gold and her individual semifinal.
In the 400m hurdles final, Slovakia’s Emma Zapletalová took the gold medal with a time of 52.91 seconds. Emily Newnham of Great Britain earned silver (53.33), and Fatoumata Binta Diallo of Portugal took bronze (53.55). Iuel has announced that she will retire from individual competition following the conclusion of this season.
