Amambai uses Guarani language to improve indigenous access to forensic services
In Amambai, Mato Grosso do Sul, the use of the Guarani language is improving access to essential services for the local indigenous population. Marlene Ortiz, an indigenous pedagogue and nursing technician, serves as a linguistic bridge at the Regional Unit of Forensic Science and Identification (URPI).
Through a partnership with the local government, Ortiz assists during medico-legal examinations, DNA testing guidance, civil identification processes, and when families seek information regarding deceased relatives. Her presence helps overcome language barriers for those who cannot communicate in Portuguese, fostering greater trust between the community and state services.
According to 2022 IBGE Census data, indigenous residents make up 25.4% of Amambai's population, the third-largest indigenous group among municipalities in Mato Grosso do Sul. Since 2024, Guarani Kaiowá has been recognized as an official co-language in the municipality under Municipal Law No. 2,905.
