Amancio Ortega: The origins of the Pontegadea real estate empire
The real estate empire of Amancio Ortega, founded through his investment vehicle Pontegadea, began in February 2002 with the acquisition of four hotels in Spain: the Abascal in Madrid, the Villa in Bilbao, the Iruña Park in Pamplona, and the Pirineos in Lleida.
These properties, totaling 643 rooms, were purchased for 91.4 million euros using dividends from Inditex. The acquisition established a long-term strategy where Pontegadea acts as a property owner rather than a hospitality operator. By acquiring buildings with existing operators, Ortega collects rental income while avoiding the operational complexities of hotel management. This model has since allowed the portfolio to expand across four continents.
