Amanda Abbington reaches settlement with BBC over Strictly allegations
Actress Amanda Abbington has reached an out-of-court settlement with BBC Studios following allegations of bullying and harassment during her time on Strictly Come Dancing. The settlement, reported to be a five-figure sum, also includes a contribution toward her legal fees.
Abbington, who competed in 2023, abruptly left the program after five weeks. While she initially cited health reasons, she later accused her professional partner, Giovanni Pernice, of creating a “toxic environment” through verbal bullying. An internal BBC review upheld some complaints, describing Pernice’s language as “belittling, dismissive, and insulting,” though it cleared him of any physical aggression.
BBC Studios provided the settlement funds, meaning the payment did not come from the license fee. Following the review, the BBC implemented new welfare measures for the show, including the presence of chaperones during training rehearsals.
