Amanda Lear accuses Miley Cyrus of plagiarizing 1978 hit
French disco singer Amanda Lear has publicly accused American pop star Miley Cyrus of plagiarism. Lear claims that the track ‘Redlights’ from Cyrus’s new album, Bass Persuades, copies the melody and rhythm of her 1978 hit ‘The Sphinx’.
Lear expressed her frustration via Instagram, stating, “Thank you Miley for copying my song The Sphinx, I am flattered,” while using hashtags such as “ripoff” and “copycat.” She noted that her record label, Universal, and her publishers are seeking acknowledgment of the plagiarism. Lear has indicated that she would prefer an amicable arrangement, such as receiving songwriting credit, but has not ruled out legal action if an agreement cannot be reached.
Cyrus has not yet issued a direct response to the allegations. While some fans have defended the singer, suggesting the similarities are coincidental or part of musical interpolation, others have noted the melodic parallels. This dispute follows previous legal scrutiny Cyrus faced regarding her single ‘Flowers’ and its alleged similarities to work by Bruno Mars.
