Amanda Seyfried discusses rejecting Marvel's Gamora role

Actress Amanda Seyfried has shared the reasons behind her decision to decline the role of Gamora in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise, a part eventually portrayed by Zoe Saldaña. Speaking during a SAG-AFTRA Foundation Q&A, Seyfried admitted she initially doubted the success of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ fearing that a film featuring a talking tree and raccoon in space might fail and “ruin” her career.

Despite the franchise becoming a massive global success, Seyfried stated she has no regrets about the decision. She cited personal priorities, including her desire to start a family and a dislike for the demands of blockbuster filmmaking, such as long hours in makeup trailers, performing stunts, and working at heights. She noted that she prefers acting in more grounded environments rather than “pretending the entire world.”
