Amarillo heatwave prompts specialized animal care at local zoo

Amarillo, Texas, is experiencing a persistent summer heatwave characterized by frequent triple-digit temperatures. The current weather pattern has seen high temperatures reaching 102°F, with little chance of rain to provide relief.

In response to the extreme heat, the Amarillo Zoo and Sanctuary has implemented various specialized care methods to protect its animals. Executive Director Stephanie Brady noted that techniques must be tailored to individual species. For example, macaws and other birds are moved to indoor enclosures once temperatures reach 95°F to prevent heat-related danger. Other animals, such as bears, utilize pools to stay cool, while some species are moved to indoor environments entirely to ensure their safety during the hot and dry spell.
