Amarinder Singh's political shift sparks Congress return rumors

Speculation is growing regarding a potential return of former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh to the Congress party ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. Although currently a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Singh has recently adopted a tone that deviates from his party's standard stance.

Singh has publicly challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s use of the term ‘dimagi Naxal’ (mental Naxal), asking for a precise definition. He argued that criticizing the government or participating in peaceful protests—such as students, job seekers, or farmers—should not be equated with Naxalism or categorized as a legal crime.

Political observers also point to a warming relationship between Singh and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Gandhi recently referred to Singh as his ‘favourite BJP politician’ and described him as ‘cool’ during an online session. Singh has acknowledged these personal ties, noting his long-standing family connection to the Gandhi family, though he maintains he is currently politically committed to the BJP.
