Amasra mine disaster: 43 miners commemorated on fourth anniversary
Commemoration ceremonies were held in the Amasra district of Bartın, Turkey, to mark the fourth anniversary of the mining disaster that claimed the lives of 43 workers on October 14, 2022. The victims were honored at their gravesites and at the entrance of the mine shaft where the explosion occurred at the Türkiye Taşkömürü Kurumu (TTK) facility.
The memorial events were attended by local officials, including Bartın Governor Nurtaç Arslan and TTK General Manager Muharrem Kiraz, as well as families of the deceased and union representatives. Participants placed 43 helmets and red carnations in front of a miner statue to honor the victims.
In statements regarding the tragedy, officials expressed condolences to the families, while labor representatives characterized the event as a preventable industrial crime resulting from inadequate safety measures and insufficient investment in mining infrastructure. Legal proceedings continue following the rejection of appeals regarding prison sentences for 20 defendants.
