Amasya earthquakes signal movement on North Anatolian Fault branch
A series of earthquakes occurred in the Göynücek district of Amasya, Turkey, including tremors measuring 3.0, 2.3, 2.7, and a final magnitude of approximately 3.6 to 4.0 according to Kandilli Observatory data.
Geologists Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş and Prof. Dr. Naci Görür provided analyses of the seismic activity. Prof. Bektaş noted that the cluster suggests the movement of a small fault segment, though he cautioned that this should not be interpreted as a definitive sign of a larger upcoming earthquake. He emphasized that the direction and depth of subsequent aftershocks will be critical for further evaluation.
Prof. Görür identified the fault as part of a massive 350-kilometer branch of the North Anatolian Fault (KAF), specifically referring to it as the Gökdere fault, which formed due to the slicing of the Anatolian Plate.
