Amateur prospector finds massive gold nugget in New South Wales
An amateur prospector from Broken Hill has discovered a large gold nugget near Tibooburra in far north-western New South Wales. The quartz-speckled find, which the discoverer named the ‘Tibooburra Spud’, weighs 1,218 grams and contains approximately 940 grams of pure gold.
Based on current spot prices, the nugget is estimated to be worth between $150,000 and $160,000. However, the finder believes it could potentially command up to $200,000 if sold to a collector. Local prospecting supplier Greg Spangler noted the rarity of the find, stating that in over 20 years of business, he had only seen one other nugget weighing more than a kilogram.
