Amateur radio experts discuss emergency communication roles in Rodenbach

The Rodenbach local chapter of the German Amateur Radio Club (DARC) hosted a presentation regarding the role of amateur radio in emergency and disaster communications. Speaker Oliver Schlag, an expert in emergency radio with experience in organizations such as the German Red Cross, discussed how radio enthusiasts can provide critical support when power, telephone, and internet services fail during natural disasters.

Historical examples of amateur radio utility include assistance following earthquakes in Nepal, Ecuador, and Turkey, as well as hurricanes in the Caribbean and the United States. In Germany, amateur radio operators provided support to the German Red Cross during the 2021 Ahrtal flood disaster.

Schlag emphasized that while amateur radio operators can complement the work of emergency services by transmitting aid requests and situation reports, they are not a replacement for professional disaster relief organizations. The event was attended by local radio enthusiasts, fire department members, and police officers.
