Amato town honors two 2015 migrant victims with dignified graves

In the municipal cemetery of Amato, Italy, the remains of two migrants who died in the April 18 2015 shipwreck in the Sicily Channel were re‑interred in newly prepared graves. The initiative, led by Mayor Saverio Ruga and inspired by local activist Tommaso Mamone, involved volunteers who cleaned the burial sites and installed commemorative plaques, with technical assistance from Fabio Andreacchio. The effort aims to give the victims a respectful memorial after years of being identified only by alphanumeric recovery codes.

The project reflects the community’s desire to preserve collective memory and human dignity for those who lost their lives attempting to reach a better future across the Mediterranean.
