Amazon achieves water‑positive status in India, returning more water than it uses

Amazon announced that it has become water‑positive in India, meaning the company now returns more water to local communities than it consumes across its direct operations. For 2025 the firm reported returning 120% of the water it used, verified by internal and third‑party audits. The achievement comes ahead of its original 2027 target and is part of a broader global water‑stewardship strategy.

The water‑positive result stems from three pillars: reducing water use (data centres use no water for cooling and low‑flow fixtures are installed in offices and fulfilment centres), reusing water (on‑site sewage treatment recycled about 298 million litres for flushing and irrigation) and replenishing water (rain‑water harvesting collected roughly 178 million litres and Amazon pledged more than $6.5 million to projects that will replenish over 4 billion litres annually across several Indian states). Amazon’s VP of operations for India, Abhinav Singh, highlighted the importance of the initiative for communities facing acute water stress.
