Amazon and Cerrado deforestation hit historic lows in Brazil

Data from Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE) shows that deforestation in both the Amazon and the Cerrado biomes reached historic lows between August 2025 and July 2026. Amazon deforestation fell by 41.8% to 3,335 square kilometers, the lowest level recorded since satellite monitoring began in 1988. The Cerrado biome also saw a significant decline, with deforestation dropping 23.8% to 5,516 square kilometers, marking its lowest rate since 2001.

Government officials attribute these declines to strengthened environmental enforcement, increased satellite monitoring, and integrated inspection operations. Since 2023, authorities have conducted over 76,000 inspection operations and issued more than 25,000 fines related to deforestation. The reduction in Amazon clearing is estimated to have avoided approximately 1.2 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions since the start of the Lula administration.

These environmental milestones occur as Brazil approaches a presidential election run-off on October 25. The current administration has maintained a goal of achieving zero illegal deforestation by 2030.
