Amazon and Flipkart review unlicensed security cameras in India

Amazon and Walmart’s Flipkart have launched reviews of internet-enabled security camera listings on their Indian platforms following reports of widespread unlicensed sales. An analysis revealed that out of approximately 770 security camera listings on these platforms, more than 700 models were not included in the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) database of approved brands and devices.

These regulatory checks follow strict government testing rules implemented to mitigate espionage and cybersecurity risks. The Indian government requires manufacturers to submit hardware and software for certification to prevent sensitive footage from being transferred abroad. Concerns regarding unauthorized surveillance were heightened earlier this year when authorities uncovered a spying network using Chinese-made SIM-enabled cameras near military sites.

In response to the findings, several listings have already been removed, including products from brands such as EZVIZ (owned by Hikvision) and Imou (owned by Dahua Technology). The review also identified compliance issues with local brand Maizic Smarthomes, which listed numerous uncertified WiFi cameras. The security camera industry in India is currently valued at approximately $4.4 billion.
