Amazon and Oracle highlight AI's impact on software engineering

Major technology companies are highlighting the impact of artificial intelligence on software engineering and employee productivity.

An Amazon HR leader reported using the company’s AI-powered coding tool, Kiro, to write over 100,000 lines of code, noting that the technology allowed her to build applications despite not having coded for 25 years. Amazon has made AI tools and training available to its employees to encourage internal problem-solving and automation.

Oracle CEO Mike Sicilia expressed optimism regarding AI-assisted engineering, suggesting it could lead to massive jumps in productivity. While Sicilia views the technology as a positive disruptor for the software industry, Oracle has implemented interim restrictions for the OpenJDK open-source project. The company currently prohibits the submission of code generated by large language models or similar deep-learning systems due to concerns regarding security, intellectual property, and review workloads.
