Amazon builds $2 billion Gilroy data center bypassing public vote

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is constructing a $2 billion data center in Gilroy, California, utilizing 45-year-old land-use classifications to bypass public votes and town hall hearings. The project, situated on approximately 25 hectares of land previously designated for agriculture, was approved through an administrative signature by the city's community development director rather than through the Planning Commission or City Council.

Local residents expressed frustration, noting many only discovered the project once construction began. Some community members reported that the window for public comment on environmental reviews had already closed by the time they sought to voice concerns. Primary resident apprehensions center on the facility's high energy requirements and water consumption in a drought-prone region.

In response to environmental concerns, Amazon has stated it intends to power the site with 100% renewable energy through negotiations with Silicon Valley Clean Energy and plans to implement wastewater recycling systems. Gilroy Mayor Greg Bozzo defended the process, noting that similar industrial developments have been approved previously and highlighting that the project will generate tax revenue and jobs for the city.
