Amazon ECS adds deployment strategies for VPC Lattice

Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS) has introduced native support for managed traffic shifting strategies when using Amazon VPC Lattice. This update allows for blue/green, linear, and canary deployment models for services that utilize VPC Lattice for service-to-service communication across VPCs and AWS accounts.

Users can now control the speed of traffic migration during updates, choosing between shifting all traffic at once (blue/green), in equal increments (linear), or starting with a small percentage (canary). The feature includes deployment lifecycle hooks, such as Lambda and pause hooks, to allow for custom validation or manual approvals. Additionally, the system supports automatic rollbacks via Amazon CloudWatch alarms and the ECS deployment circuit breaker to mitigate issues during a release.

This functionality is available for both new and existing ECS services across all AWS Regions where VPC Lattice is currently supported. The integration allows for controlled deployments without the necessity of configuring an Application Load Balancer (ALB) separately for these specific traffic-shifting patterns.
