Amazon eliminates 455 unnecessary processes via CEO initiative

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has implemented a initiative to combat organizational bureaucracy and slow decision-making. To address the accumulation of unnecessary rules and approval processes as the company grows, Jassy launched the ‘Bureaucracy Mailbox’. This initiative encouraged employees to report any rules or processes they deemed meaningless or time-wasting.

Within approximately one year, the project received over 1,500 reports from staff. This led to the modification or elimination of 455 unnecessary rules and processes. The initiative aimed to maintain the agility of a startup despite the company's massive scale.

In a broader context of productivity, personal ‘micro-rules’ are also highlighted as tools to reduce decision fatigue. Examples include Elon Musk’s practice of managing his schedule in five-minute increments and Steve Jobs’ decision to wear the same clothing daily to focus on creative output.
