Brazil creates four sustainable development reserves in Amazonas

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has signed decrees to expand environmental protections in Brazil, creating four new sustainable development reserves (RDS) in the state of Amazonas. These reserves, which cover approximately 669,000 hectares in the region influenced by the BR-319 highway, are designed to protect biodiversity while allowing local populations to utilize natural resources through sustainable management.

The new reserves include Tupana Igapó-Açu I in Borba, Tupana Igapó-Açu II in Beruri and Tapauá, Canaã in Careiro and Autazes, and Mirari in Humaitá. Additionally, the government expanded the Sete Cidades National Park in Piauí by 7,192 hectares, bringing its total area to 13,502 hectares.

In conjunction with these measures, the Brazilian Forestry Service signed 40-year forest management concession contracts for the Humaitá National Forest, covering 162,700 hectares. The administration also allocated R$ 50.5 million from the Amazon Fund to the Naturezas Quilombolas project, which aims to support territorial and environmental management for quilombola communities across more than 16 territories in the Legal Amazon.
