Amazon Leo satellite network hits 396 satellites, ready for initial internet service

Amazon’s Leo broadband constellation, formerly Project Kuiper, reached a total of 396 low‑Earth‑orbit satellites after an Atlas V launch on 2 July. The milestone clears the threshold for the company to begin limited initial service later this year, starting with the United Kingdom and other priority markets such as the United States, Canada, France and Germany.

The service aims to deliver speeds from 25 Mbps up to 400 Mbps, using phased‑array terminals for residential, enterprise, government and in‑flight applications. While still far behind SpaceX’s Starlink, which operates around 10,000 satellites, the launch positions Amazon as a credible second player in the satellite‑broadband market and sets the stage for further launches to reach its planned 3,200‑plus satellite constellation by mid‑2026.
