Amazon launches Quick AI assistant in Europe with sovereignty limitations
Amazon has announced the general availability of Quick, its corporate AI assistant, for macOS and Windows. Positioned as a competitor to Microsoft Copilot, Quick aims to mitigate ‘shadow AI’ risks by allowing organizations to process data within their own AWS environments, utilizing tools like CloudWatch and CloudTrail for auditing and compliance.
However, a significant gap exists regarding digital sovereignty in Europe. While Quick is available in standard AWS regions such as Frankfurt, London, and Ireland, it is currently unavailable on the AWS European Sovereign Cloud located in Brandenburg, Germany.
The distinction is critical due to legal frameworks like the U.S. CLOUD Act, which allows American authorities to request data from U.S. companies regardless of storage location. While the AWS Sovereign Cloud was designed to isolate data from U.S. jurisdiction by using EU-resident employees and a separate German entity, Quick remains tied to standard AWS regions, potentially leaving European data subject to American legal reach.
