Amazon MGM Studios Plans Masters of the Universe Sequel Despite Box‑Office Flop

Amazon MGM Studios is considering moving forward with a sequel to *Masters of the Universe* even though the film earned only about $89.9 million worldwide against a reported production budget of $170‑200 million. The movie opened in the United States with a $29.4 million weekend, placed second behind a low‑budget *Scary Movie* reboot, and fell to fifth place the following weekend, far short of the roughly $340 million needed to break even by traditional standards.

Amazon executives argue that the film’s theatrical performance is only one part of a broader “holistic distribution strategy.” They view the title as a long‑term asset for Prime Video, aiming to boost subscriptions, merchandise sales, and franchise awareness rather than relying on box‑office revenue. Kevin Wilson, head of domestic distribution for Amazon MGM Studios, said the opening provides “a solid start…building awareness and engagement that will continue well beyond the theatrical window.” This approach mirrors Amazon’s earlier commitment to other high‑cost properties such as *The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power*, where the company continues investing despite mixed reception.

Analysts note that the film attracted mainly nostalgic viewers over age 35, limiting its family appeal and contributing to its modest theatrical run. Nonetheless, Amazon believes the sequel can strengthen its streaming library and attract new Prime Video subscribers over the long term.
