Amazon MGM's 'Masters of the Universe' Box Office Bomb

The new "Masters of the Universe" film opened with a worldwide gross of about $54.3 million, far below the $170‑$200 million production budget reported for the project. Domestic earnings were $29.3 million and overseas markets contributed roughly $25 million, leaving the movie far short of the $400‑$500 million needed to break even after accounting for theater cuts and marketing costs.

Amazon MGM’s domestic distribution chief described the opening as “truly special” and argued that the release builds awareness that will extend beyond the theatrical window onto Prime Video. Analysts and box‑office observers, however, labeled the performance a soft opening and noted the audience was 66 % male and largely over 45, indicating the film failed to attract younger viewers or families.

The studio’s spin on the results emphasizes a streaming‑first strategy, but the financial shortfall suggests the film will not meet franchise expectations without a significant post‑theatrical boost.
