Amazon plans 7.65-GW gas power plant for Texas AI data center

Amazon is planning to secure a new data center campus in Texas by constructing its own 7.65-gigawatt gas power plant. If implemented as planned, the facility could become one of the largest of its kind in the United States.

The project follows a “datacenter first, energy dazu” model, utilizing multiple gas turbines to provide power directly to the campus. This strategy aims to reduce reliance on the local power grid and mitigate potential shortages caused by the massive energy demands of AI infrastructure. However, the plan has drawn criticism regarding expected CO2 emissions and potential conflicts with climate goals.
