Amazon plans drone deliveries in Westborough despite local opposition

Amazon is moving forward with plans to launch Prime Air drone deliveries from its warehouse in Westborough, Massachusetts, despite significant local opposition. During a recent meeting in a Westborough hotel, residents expressed concerns regarding noise, safety, and privacy. An Amazon representative noted that while residents can opt out of receiving drone deliveries, there is “no opting out of drones flying over your property,” and the company will not publish specific flight routes.

If approved, the drone operations would cover a 7.5-mile radius, potentially reaching 15 communities west of Boston. While the Westborough Planning Board is scheduled to vote on site plans for the necessary facility upgrades by early October, the board only has authority over the physical landing pads and trailers. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) maintains control over the airspace, and Amazon is currently awaiting approval from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation regarding landing areas and local interactions.
