Amazon pledges $1B to U.S. communities near data centers

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched the ‘Built Together’ program, pledging more than $1 billion over the next five years to support communities hosting its data centers in the United States. The initiative aims to address local opposition and concerns regarding the environmental and economic impact of artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The funding will focus on several key areas: education, workforce training, energy affordability, and water conservation. Specific commitments include providing free community college and hands-on training for approximately 300,000 students, as well as funding for local schools and community buildings. Amazon also plans to expand its network of physical training facilities to provide skilled trade certifications.

In response to growing scrutiny and legislative pressure regarding transparency, Amazon announced it will no longer use non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) with local governments for its data center projects. Additionally, the company committed to becoming ‘water positive’ by 2030, meaning it intends to return more water to communities than its facilities consume. AWS CEO Matt Garman defended the expansion, noting that over 100 data center moratoriums are currently under consideration across the U.S., which he argued could hinder the nation’s position in the global AI race.
