Amazon Prime prices to drop following German court ruling

The German Federal Court of Justice (BGH) has ruled that Amazon's 2022 Prime subscription price increase was invalid. The court found that the clauses in Amazon's general terms and conditions violated transparency requirements, as they did not clearly inform customers of their rights regarding price adjustments.

As a result, Amazon is reverting the prices for long-term members whose subscriptions began before September 15, 2022, and have remained uninterrupted. Annual memberships will return to 69 euros from 89.90 euros, and monthly rates will drop from 8.99 euros to 7.99 euros. Amazon has begun notifying affected members via email.

A separate legal proceeding is currently underway regarding the potential reimbursement of overcharged fees. The Verbraucherzentrale Nordrhein-Westfalen, which led the litigation, has filed a class action to seek refunds for millions of affected customers.
