Amazon Prime Video to secure exclusive NHL national rights in Canada
The landscape of televised hockey in Canada is undergoing a significant shift. Starting with the 2026-2027 NHL season, Amazon Prime Video will become the exclusive broadcaster for national Wednesday night games under a twelve-year agreement. The deal includes at least 26 regular-season games annually in both English and French, as well as exclusivity for select Stanley Cup playoff rounds.
Simultaneously, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) is diversifying its sports programming. In a departure from the long-standing tradition of ‘Hockey Night in Canada’, which has aired on Saturday nights since 1952, the public broadcaster has begun experimenting with other sports. This includes broadcasting cricket, specifically the Super60 league, as part of a strategy to bridge summer and winter sports and showcase Olympic disciplines.
These changes reflect a broader trend of major sporting events migrating from traditional television networks to digital streaming platforms, requiring viewers to adapt to new subscription models and devices.
