Amazon pulls Sam Altman biopic “Artificial” from its lineup

Amazon announced it will no longer distribute the near‑finished biographical drama “Artificial,” which portrays OpenAI co‑founder and CEO Sam Altman. The film, directed by Luca Guadagnino and starring Andrew Garfield as Altman, had been slated for a limited theatrical run and wider release in 2027, with plans for a SXSW screening. Amazon said the movie would be “better served” by another studio and is working with the filmmakers to find a new distributor.

The decision follows Amazon’s recent $50 billion investment in OpenAI and its growing partnership with the AI firm, raising speculation that the company wants to avoid a film that could depict its tech partner unfavorably. Other studios—including Netflix, A24, Focus Features and Warner Bros. – have also passed on the project, leaving Neon and Mubi as possible future homes.
