Amazon rainforest future at risk amid Brazilian election results
Following the first round of the Brazilian presidential election, climate experts are warning of potential environmental consequences if the right-wing candidate gains power. Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, secured 47 percent of the vote, while the incumbent, Lula, received 44.2 percent.
Under Lula’s administration, deforestation in the Amazon has decreased by 45 percent, reaching its lowest level in over a decade. However, experts fear a victory for the Bolsonaro faction could reverse these protections and return to policies that favor land exploitation for cattle ranching and crop cultivation.
As the Amazon regulates global weather systems and serves as a critical carbon sink, Márcio Astrini, leader of the Climate Observatory, warned that Brazil risks moving toward a stance of “climate denial” similar to political trends seen in the United States.
