Amazon Redshift adds single-node clusters and Apache Iceberg v3 support

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has expanded the capabilities of Amazon Redshift, introducing support for single-node clusters using rg. large instances. Powered by AWS Graviton processors, these instances allow customers to run smaller workloads, proofs of concept, and tests in a cost-effective manner without requiring high availability. RG instances are designed to deliver up to 2.4x faster performance for data warehouse and data lake workloads compared to previous generation RA3 instances, while maintaining a 30% lower price per vCPU.

Additionally, Amazon Redshift now supports reading and writing Apache Iceberg v3 tables. This support is available via RG instance types and Redshift Serverless. The integration allows for the use of v3 features such as default column values, row lineage, and delete vectors through SQL. When using RG clusters or Redshift Serverless, data lake queries are processed using the cluster's own compute resources, eliminating separate charges for data lake queries that were previously associated with Redshift Spectrum pricing on DC2 or RA3 clusters.
