Amazon region faces geopolitical and conservation challenges

The Amazon region serves as a critical strategic hub for global energy and natural resources, encompassing significant water availability, biodiversity, minerals, and forest areas. Beyond its environmental role, the region is a site of geopolitical competition involving territorial control, infrastructure development, and economic interests such as mining, hydroelectric power, and logistics networks.

In addition to geopolitical tensions, artisanal fishing plays a vital role in Amazonian conservation and local stability. Approximately 95% of freshwater fishing in the region is small-scale, and roughly 75% of local communities rely on these resources for food security. However, effective management is hindered by a lack of integrated monitoring systems to track fish stocks across the vast basin, complicating the creation of evidence-based policies for biodiversity and resource protection.
