Amazon reports 2.5 billion gallons water used by data centers in 2025

Amazon disclosed that its global data centre operations withdrew about 2.5 billion gallons of water in 2025, a 2 % decrease from the previous year. The company said its water‑usage effectiveness reached 0.12 liters per kilowatt‑hour, a 52 % improvement since 2021 and roughly seven times better than the industry average of 0.84 L/kWh.

Amazon said it has returned roughly two‑thirds of the water it used through community projects and is 75 % of the way toward its goal of becoming water‑positive by 2030, meaning it will return more water than it consumes. The firm plans to expand recycled‑water cooling at more than 120 US data centres by 2030, a move projected to save over 530 million gallons of fresh water each year. It currently operates 26 facilities using 100 % reclaimed water and has contracts for an additional 130 sites worldwide. Amazon’s data‑centre fleet, now numbering about 924 locations, continues to grow as it expands AI‑focused infrastructure.
