Amazon river recession threatens logistics and Manaus industry
The Amazon region is facing a significant river recession due to below-average rainfall, which is expected to persist until early next year. In Manaus, the Rio Negro closed August 2026 at 24.19 meters, a level 4.17 meters higher than the same date in 2024, though the river continues to descend.
The Serviço Geológico do Brasil (SGB) warns that the drought, potentially intensified by El Niño, could lead to extreme low water levels. Projections suggest Manaus could see levels as low as 12.92 meters if conditions mirror the 2015 El Niño event, a scenario described as catastrophic. Such extremes would severely impact regional logistics and the Manaus Free Trade Zone, which relies on river transport for industrial components.
To mitigate the impact on navigation, Brazil's National Department of Transport Infrastructure (Dnit) plans to begin dredging operations in critical areas by mid-September. However, industry associations express concern that these measures may be insufficient to prevent a crisis during the peak dry season expected between October and November.
